In the garden of my old family home we had all sorts of treasures: gardenias (my mum’s favourite), lavender, an African violet with the most heavenly perfume which only flowered once a year, a giant jacaranda you could climb and which in spring turned the lawn into a stunning purple carpet, a variety of roses whose petals I would delight in pulling off (much to my mother’s horror)...

As a teenager catching a train each day to school in Newtown I’d strategically pick which side of the train I sat on. Because I’m O.C.D you may ask? Well sort of… but the main reason was to secure a prime view of the Summer Hill Silos. I was absolutely transfixed by these cylindrical monuments! Especially coming home in the afternoon as the sun was sinking, they became majestic...
